HIPAA Snippets: New Videos Aim to Clarify Regulations

By   |  June 30, 2014

Whether you are a physician with an established online reputation or are using the Dr. Leonardo webuilder to create your practice's first official website, you are most likely already aware that there are federal regulations in place to help you monitor your practice's digital presence.

These terms are included in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Over the years, amendments have been made to accommodate for changes and advancements in technology, which have drastically influenced how patient privacy is handled.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 further expanded the guidelines regarding patient privacy and security provisions that were originally outlined within HIPAA. Understandably, all of these changing regulations can seem rather confusing even to the most tech-savvy doctors.

To make it easier for physicians to remain in compliance with HIPAA's regulations as they transition from paper filing systems to digital records, merchant data security firm SecurityMetrics has created a series of short videos. Called HIPAA Snippets, the videos explain HIPAA's conditions in clear, easy to understand terms.

Each video is approximately 60 seconds long and focuses on a particular aspect of HIPAA, with topics ranging from social media compliance to protecting private health information. Click on the preview below to view a video about choosing a HIPAA-compliant password.
