Making the Change from a Paper Filing System to Electronic Records

Upload: May 22, 2014The number of medical providers who have switched to electronic medical records (EMR) is steadily on the rise, having tripled since 2010. This is due in part to the financial incentives that are a major aspect of recent healthcare reform acts.

Practices that meet and demonstrate regulatory compliance receive financial incentives for the “meaningful use” of EHR technology. These regulations include transitioning to an EMR or electronic health records (EHR) system and/or adding a patient portal to the practice’s website so that patients can have access to their health information online at any time.

Another facet of “meaningful use” is the addition of patient education content to a practice’s site as a means of informing patients about various health conditions, treatments and procedures. This content can be printed out and presented to the patient during or after their appointment, and they can later view the health-related information on the physician’s site at their convenience.

Along with receiving monetary initiatives from the government, changing over from a paper filing system to an EMR or EHR provides many other benefits to a medical practice. One advantage is that entering information about a patient digitally serves as a solid records management practice that can easily be monitored, updated and added to.

Electronic records also help to streamline your patients’ data and make sure that their forms are consistently being filled out correctly by staff members. Implementing a comprehensive electronic records management system that is government and HIPAA-compliant and follows the proper guidelines will also prevent your practice from being penalized or owing fines for not properly abiding by the latest EHR regulations.
